Sticking with WordPress for now

A few weeks ago I was seriously considering switching from self-hosted WordPress to a static site generator. But the reality is that while it irks me that I need to secure this site against break-ins, the administrative burden isn't that heavy, and a lot of that is automated for me.

With that said, what I would like to do is develop a custom theme that is as lightweight as possible while still supporting the Gutenberg editor. It would give me an opportunity to learn PHP fully and practice with HTML and CSS too.
